When traveling around the world I always try to find the best out of each country. Sometimes I just stop and spend a lot of time in the capital, sometimes in the countryside; sometimes I just try to meet as many people as possible and many times I combine all these with visiting major museums which brings another dimension to my ultimate world travel experience. This way I try to get most out my travels. On one of my recent travels I visited Germany and the capital of Berlin.

Berlin is the capital city and seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany. As a city-state Berlin is a country and is the center of the metropolitan region Berlin / Brandenburg. Berlin with 3.4 million inhabitants is the most populous and largest city of Germany, and the second largest by population and by area, the fifth largest city in the European Union. Berlin is divided into twelve districts. In the urban area are the rivers Spree and Havel, several small streams and several lakes.

First documented in the 13th Century mentioned was Berlin in the course of history, capital of Brandenburg, Prussia and the German Empire. In fact, it was the eastern part of the capital city of the German Democratic Republic. Since reunification in 1990 Berlin it is the capital of Germany and since 1999 the seat of the German Bundestag, the Federal President and the Federal Council.

The metropolis of Berlin is a cosmopolitan city of culture, politics, media and sciences. It is an important European transportation hub and one of the most visited cities on the continent. Institutions such as universities, research institutions and museums enjoy international reputation. In the city are living and working artists, diplomats, and immigrants from all over the world. Berlin's history, nightlife, architecture and diverse living conditions are well known.

Tourism in Berlin
Berlin is one of the busiest centers of national and international tourism. Since 2001, the number of overnight guests, the newly built hotels and their bed capacity rose to above average. In 2009, there were approximately 18.9 million overnight stays in Berlin accommodation facilities of 8.3 million guests, and counted an estimated 132 million days visitors. After London, Paris and Rome the city is the preferred tourist destination in Europe.

International visitors make up about 40 percent of admissions. Here, visitors from Italy, Great Britain, the United States and the Netherlands are in the top group. Main attractions are architectural, historical sites, museums, festivals, shopping, nightlife and major events, including hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Berlin is also one of the largest international conference organizers in the world. The ICC is the largest conference center in Europe, and along with the Messe (Fair) Berlin on business tourism.

Through this development the tourism industry in Berlin has become a mainstay of the regional economy. In addition to the hospitality industry and the retail sector benefited greatly from the Berlin tourists.
